This is a really exciting idea - at the minute two-thirds of the people who need HIV treatment aren't getting it, and cost is a huge factor in that. The planned UNITAID patent pool would cover low and middle income countries only - not Western Europe or America - so pharmaceutical profits generated there and in other highly developed countries would be protected. It would also mean that they get new revenue streams from across Africa, Asia and Latin America. It could completely revolutionise access to HIV treatment.
